That's the core challenge behind generative engine optimization (GEO), sometimes called answer engine optimization (AEO). It's the practice of making your brand and content visible inside AI-generated answers. And like any optimization work, it starts with measurement.

Why Your Current Analytics Can't See This

In the previous post, we covered how to track visitors who click through from AI chatbots in GA4. That matters, but it's only part of the picture. Much of AI's influence happens without a click:

Traditional SEO metrics like rankings and click-through rate don't map neatly onto AI answers either. There's no fixed "position one" when every response is generated fresh.

The Metrics That Matter

GEO measurement is still young, but a common set of metrics has emerged:

MetricWhat it tells you
Mention rateHow often your brand appears in AI answers for a set of relevant questions
Citation rateHow often AI tools link to your website as a source
Share of voiceYour mentions compared with competitors' for the same questions
Position or prominenceWhether you're recommended first, listed in the middle or mentioned in passing
Sentiment and accuracyWhether the AI describes your brand positively and correctly
Cited pagesWhich of your pages AI tools rely on most

Mention rate and share of voice tell you whether you're part of the conversation. Citations tell you whether your content is trusted. Sentiment and accuracy tell you whether what AI says about you is helping or hurting.

Free Sources of Data

Two major search platforms now give site owners direct data on AI visibility, at no cost.

Google Search Console's generative AI performance reports. On June 12, 2026, Google introduced reports that show how often your pages are served as sources in its AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. At launch, they show impressions only, broken down by page, country, device and date, without click or query data. Google is rolling them out gradually and says more metrics will follow.

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report. Launched in beta in February 2026, it shows how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. It includes total citations, citations by page, trends over time and sample "grounding queries," the search phrases the AI used to find and cite your content. Those queries are a valuable window into how AI tools search.

If you haven't verified your site in both tools, do it now. These reports are the closest thing to official AI visibility data available today.

Dedicated AI Visibility Tools

For ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, there's no official reporting, so a new category of tools fills the gap. They work by regularly running a set of questions (often called prompts) through multiple AI platforms, recording the answers, and tracking which brands are mentioned and which sites are cited.

Options range from standalone platforms such as Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.ai to AI visibility features inside established SEO suites, including Semrush's AI Toolkit and Ahrefs' Brand Radar. Prices and features change quickly in this space, so compare current plans before committing. When evaluating tools, look for:

A Do-It-Yourself Tracking Routine

You don't need a paid tool to start. A simple spreadsheet routine will teach you a lot:

  1. Write 20 to 30 questions your customers actually ask. Mix general questions ("best CRM for startups"), comparison questions ("HubSpot vs. Salesforce") and problem questions ("how do I reduce customer churn?"). Your Search Console queries and sales team are good sources.
  2. Pick three or four AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
  3. Run each question monthly, ideally in a logged-out or fresh session so past conversations don't influence the answer. Run important questions more than once.
  4. Record the results: whether your brand was mentioned, its position, which competitors appeared, whether your site was cited, and whether the description was accurate.
  5. Calculate your mention rate and share of voice each month and watch the trend.

It's manual, and the samples are small, but it builds intuition fast. You'll quickly see which questions you own, which ones competitors dominate and which ones nobody has a strong answer for yet.

Connecting Visibility to Business Results

Visibility alone isn't the goal. To show impact, connect AI visibility data with outcomes:

That last one is low-tech but powerful. Customers can tell you about influence that no tracking code can capture.

What to Do With the Data

Once you're measuring, patterns emerge. AI tools tend to cite content that answers questions directly, includes original data or clear definitions, and is kept current. They also draw heavily on what other sites say about you, including reviews, forums and industry publications. If competitors are mentioned and you're not, look at which sources the AI cites for them. That's your roadmap.

The Bottom Line

AI answers are becoming a new front door to your brand, and most of what happens there never shows up in traditional analytics. Start with the free reports in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, run a simple monthly prompt check, and connect what you find to traffic and conversions.

Connecting AI visibility to business results depends on the same foundation as every other measurement question: a GA4 setup and reporting strategy that can actually absorb a new, messy channel without the numbers falling apart. Our Analytics Consulting & Advisory service helps teams build that kind of measurement strategy for emerging channels like this one.

GEO measurement is still imperfect, but the brands that start tracking now will understand this new channel long before their competitors do.
